Coping with a running injury

Well it’s been a while since my last post. In case you have been wondering where I have been running, the answer is I haven’t been. Unfortunately I sustained an unknown injury in my lower left leg which is yet to heal. The injury occurred during the lead up to RunGeelong and by the end of the run I was struggling to walk. After 3 days of limping the pain settled down but I decided to take a short break from running to try and rest out the injury. Once 2 weeks had passed I decided it was time to consult with a doctor.

After coming to terms with the fact I had sustained a running injury a check with the GP resulted in X-rays on my shin/ankle area for stress fractures that showed no issue. The recommendation was for rest as she suspects I may have bruised tendons. As I have been unable to run I have taken the opportunity to get in a few walks and also riding my bike as an attempt to retain my cardio exercise.

During this extended break I’m finding it difficult to not get out running. With some perfect weather recently, as well as holidays from work, the running itch unfortunately remains unscratched.

I am currently trying to develop a schedule for this years anticipated events. After setting up a spreadsheet to include dates and prices it has become apparent that fitness doesn’t come cheaply. Additionally the current fear is that it’s been that long since I’ve run whether I will have dropped too far back on my pace/fitness as well as when I will actually recover from this injury and be back running. The temptation is there to get out and push the limits, yet a nagging doubt remains if I push too hard too early I may pay a further cost by only aggravating the current injury.

To keep my running fix going social media has been both a blessing and a curse as I spend time discussing with the Instagram community both my injury and also all the fitness activities others are completing. It’s nice to see everyone continue to set both Personal Records as well as complete some great runs yet I am frustrated to not get out amongst it.

I can only hope it isn’t too long until I’m back on the roads and trails because I sure know it’s something I’m missing more than I anticipated.
